75 miles east of Atlanta, Lake Oconee was developed in 1980 by the Georgia Power Company to harness hydroelectric power from the water passing through the Wallace Dam. The lake covers 19,000 acres, and goes deep into the untouched and preserved Oconee National Forest. Easily accessible from I-20, Lake Oconee sits directly between the towns of Madison, Eatonton, and Greensboro, GA.
The lake’s shoreline stretches 375 miles and has many inlets and fingers which provide perfect natural harbors and secluded sites. At its southern end, Lake Oconee meets Lake Sinclair, and the two lakes form one continuous stretch of water. The strip of water connecting the two lakes, however, is no wider than a large river.

The area around the lake, which includes Oconee National Forest, has more than 1,500 acres of wildlife preserves and recreational areas.
